School committee approves contingency town‑meeting article to fund up to $1.9M in structural repairs at North Falmouth Elementary

The Falmouth School Committee on May 26 voted to forward a contingency town‑meeting article authorizing structural repairs at North Falmouth Elementary with an estimated total of $1.9 million.

Officials told the committee that two independent engineering teams inspected the building and that the structure is currently safe for occupancy but that additional work may be required before winter snow loads. The draft article includes $200,000 described during the meeting as encumbered from the FY26 school department operating budget; the committee said the precise amount of insurance reimbursement is not yet known. "It is anticipated that the total cost will be further offset by insurance proceeds," the acting chair said in describing the article.

Committee members discussed timing, the town meeting process and communication to parents and town meeting members. One member urged attaching the names of the inspecting engineers to reassure parents; others emphasized the short summer construction window and the need to move in parallel with insurers. Staff said the select board will place the article on a special town‑meeting warrant if needed and that the select board will review scheduling options on June 8.

A motion to act on the town‑meeting article was made, seconded and carried by the committee in a voice vote; the acting chair announced the motion passed.
