County contractor updates commission on operations at regional shooting facility

"Our concern is your child will find a gun ... will they know what to do when they find it?" he said.
On operations, Catron said the facility increased its weekly availability: staff previously ran approximately four days and 32 hours per week; the facility is now open seven days a week, generally 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Catron said the change was driven by community demand. He described plans for a 5‑stand shotgun feature, new berms to enable more bays and potential archery and sporting‑clay expansions, and said securing dirt to build berms is currently a limiting infrastructure need.
Commissioners asked about outreach and whether free classes compete with local vendors. Catron said many classes follow United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) written curricula and are not meant to duplicate other local offerings; he said the operator aims to be inclusive and to work with local shops and clubs to encourage lawful, safe range use.
Catron thanked county staff and community partners for support and said the operator will continue to refine programming and return to report progress.
