Northwest Local board approves hires, contracts, fees and meal prices

The Northwest Local Board of Education approved a slate of routine personnel and operational items at its May meeting, including new hires, contract renewals, summer tutors, meal-price changes and student handbooks.
On motions moved and seconded by board members, trustees voted to approve minutes from the April 27 meeting and to accept multiple recommended hires for the 2026–27 school year. Approvals included bus drivers (Vincent Escudo assigned to bus 15), intervention specialists and summer cleaning/steaming positions, as well as several one-year limited teaching contracts and continuing-contract recommendations. Board members also approved a separate list of tutors and contingency non-reemployment of several staff pending federal funding; staff said those employees will be rehired once federal funds arrive.
Other votes approved position and salary-equivalent adjustments (for example, a math teacher returning to an instructional-coach role and step changes for staff), acceptance of resignations (including a retirement effective Jan. 1, 2027), and renewal of specific staff contracts for 2026–27.
The board authorized summer third-grade intervention tutoring (June 2–July 2) at $26/hour and approved extended-school-year transportation staffing (July 20–Aug. 7) as needed. The district also approved supplemental coaching contracts and certified-substitute arrangements for ESY services (Tina Gilbert at $65/hour, procured through an ESC partnership to secure hard-to-find specialists).
On district fees, trustees raised breakfast prices districtwide from $2.00 to $2.25 and approved lunch prices of $3.50 (primary and Stinson) and $3.75 (middle and high schools) for 2026–27. The board also approved the student fee schedule and district handbooks, and accepted donations to the middle school band and other programs.
A procedural motion to move one employee between recommendation lists preceded a continuing-contract vote in which one trustee recorded an abstention; otherwise roll-call votes were unanimous.
What happens next: Personnel hires and contract changes take effect on the dates listed in the personnel recommendations (many effective Aug. 17, 2026); staff will implement the ESY and meal-price changes for the 2026–27 school year.
