Mount Hood Community College briefs council on bond projects, enrollment and economic impact

Lisa Scribe, introduced as president of the community college, and board chair Andrew Spear reported to the Troutdale City Council on May 26 about the college's recent accomplishments and bond-funded projects.
Scribe said the college serves a tri-county area with more than 18,000 students and that last year it awarded nearly 1,500 degrees and certificates. "Our foundation is absolutely amazing. This year, they're on track to award they will have awarded over 1,000,000 dollars in scholarships to students," she said, noting an institutional emphasis on affordability and a tuition rate of $124 per credit.
Board chair Andrew Spear summarized bond-funded projects including classroom modernization, roof and HVAC replacement, and a covered pool project currently in piling and foundation work with contractor selection forthcoming. Spear said the bond originally asked for $136,000,000 and additional financing and state matches have brought the program's capital resources above that initial number; he described hiring a general contractor soon to allow prioritization of local contractors during bid solicitation.
Councilors and attendees asked technical and programmatic questions about workforce training, cosmetology program restoration, and community-event impacts such as swim meets. College leaders said the bond-funded projects will roll out over a five-year timeline and the bond oversight committee will meet quarterly to review progress.
