Town board considers CPF purchase of two Hampton Bays parcels for open-space preservation

The board considered two proposed community preservation acquisitions in Hampton Bays: 17 Larboard Road and 24 North Road. Jackie Fenland, director of community preservation, told the board the parcels (purported owner NRO Corp) total roughly 4.8 acres and are designated as open-space greenbelt targets in the Shinnecock Hills Creek Greenway project plan.
Fenland described the properties as recovering pitch-pine oak forest damaged by southern pine beetle and said CPF staff recommend adding 24 North Road to the open-space designation and including both parcels in the stewardship management plan. She noted one parcel includes seasonal cottages and the other is undeveloped, and that the owner has expressed interest in selling for $1.9 million.
Resident Bridget Maher and other commenters supported preservation and asked whether the land might be used for US Open parking; staff replied it will not be used for that purpose. Board members moved to close the public hearing; no final purchase vote was recorded at the meeting, and staff indicated further steps will follow for stewardship planning and possible acquisition.
