Hancock County authorizes letter of support for sheriff’s K9 grant; reserve funds to cover purchase if grant denied

The Hancock County commissioners on Feb. 3 approved a letter of support for a K9 grant and agreed that, if the grant is not awarded, the county will use the K9 reserve account or private donations to fund a replacement dog for the retired K9 "Finn."
Lieutenant Dakota Dupuis asked the commissioners to approve replacement of the sheriff’s retired K9 "Finn" by purchasing another dog through a specialized breeder and to sign a letter of support for a grant application that could fund the purchase.
The board approved a motion authorizing the chair to sign a letter of support for the K9 grant application and stated that, if the grant is not awarded, funds to cover the purchase would come from the Sheriff’s Office K9 reserve account and/or from private donations. The motion passed unanimously (Clark/DiBella, 3-0).
Lt. Dupuis told the board the breeder is willing to wait for the grant decision if the county provides a letter of intent assuring the breeder of purchase by grant funds or reserve funds. The motion does not obligate immediate county general-fund spending; it authorizes the letter of support and confirms a funding fallback plan.
