Jackson schedules Oct. 3 special meeting to appoint mayor after Reina resignation

Jackson Township’s council voted to hold a special meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 3 to select a new mayor to serve the remainder of Mayor Michael Reina’s term, the council announced at its Sept. 25 regular meeting.
Council President Kyung read Resolution 306-2025, which directs the clerk to provide notice under the Open Public Meetings Act and schedules the governing body’s special session to consider and act on the mayoral appointment. The resolution cites the state statute that controls municipal vacancy procedures.
Asked during public comment whether a special election could be held instead, Attorney McGuckin said the statute provides for appointment when a vacancy occurs at this point in the calendar year, noting, “By statute, there is no provision for a special election.” The vacancy-filling process under the Municipal Vacancy Law requires the governing body to select a successor to serve until the next general election provided by law.
The council made the scheduling decision at the meeting after the clerk added an item to the bill list and read the resolution into the record. The special meeting will be held at the Jackson Township Municipal Building; notice will be posted in accordance with NJSA 10:4-6 as required by the Open Public Meetings Act.
Next steps: the council is expected to consider nominations and vote at the Oct. 3 special meeting; the term being filled runs through Dec. 31, 2026, and the next mayoral election will occur in November 2026.
