The Los Altos City Recreation & Cultural Commission met May 19 and took several actions on programming and public art.
The commission approved two prior sets of minutes after corrections for spelling and minor edits. Commissioners agreed to expand the community center’s gallery rotation to three or four shows per year and asked staff to return with an implementation plan. For the city’s outdoor Halloween movie at Grama Park, commissioners selected a film from a staff-provided list and directed staff to secure public-performance licensing and finalize logistics. Staff noted licensing availability and estimated certain film licenses could cost about $400–$500.
On public art, commissioners reviewed a proposal for a mural at Woodland Library, heard a staff estimate of roughly $42,000–$60,000 for a moderate-detail mural (wall roughly 12 feet by 85 feet), and voted unanimously to recommend that City Council approve funding up to $60,000; final funding decisions remain with the council.
Staff also reported upcoming events (Family Fun Day on June 6 and the summer concert series beginning mid-June), and commissioners provided ad hoc updates on playground procurement options, a mosaic bench project with community contributions, and review of maintenance priorities for existing public art. The commission adjourned at about 7:14 p.m.
