Commission agrees to expand community center gallery rotations to 3–4 shows a year

The Los Altos City Recreation & Cultural Commission voted May 19 to expand the community center gallery rotation from the current two shows per year to three or four, aiming to include school groups, community organizations and occasional single-artist exhibitions.
A commissioner introduced the proposal and described the current selection process: the commission sets a theme, issues a call for art on the city portal, and selects works for the gallery. Staff explained that rotations could vary by size and that the gallery has previously accommodated as many as 24 pieces depending on configuration.
Staff and commissioners discussed logistics, including frequency, reception events, and the labor of hanging art. Staff said they have capacity to manage up to four shows a year but noted artists often prefer longer hangs; commissioners said more frequent rotation could broaden participation and bring variety into the community center space.
A motion to move forward with the expanded schedule and to bring implementation details back to the commission was seconded and approved by roll call. Staff will prepare a follow-up report outlining scheduling, themes and any reception requirements.
