The Los Altos City Recreation & Cultural Commission voted May 19 to recommend that the City Council approve funding, not to exceed $60,000, for a proposed mural on the Woodland Library building.
Commissioners reviewed a presentation and a staff estimate that put the mural’s moderate-detail cost between $42,000 and $60,000. Staff told the commission the project was not included in the current fiscal-year budget and that possible funding sources include the Art & Blue fund or the Arden Loop fund; staff said any formal recommendation must go to City Council for final approval.
During discussion commissioners emphasized the mural’s potential to bring public art farther into neighborhoods that feel disconnected from downtown and noted local fundraising partners have already pledged support. Staff described the mural’s scale—approximately 12 feet by 85 feet—and said cost estimates could change with final design or change orders.
“I move to recommend to the Los Altos City Council for the proposed mural on the Woodland Library as part of their outdoor improvement project, in the moderate-detail price range of $42,000 to $60,000, not to exceed $60,000,” the chair said before the roll-call vote. The commission approved the recommendation by unanimous vote.
The recommendation is advisory: City Council will review the commission’s recommendation and make any final funding decision. Staff said it will report back to the commission on council action and any changes to the project scope or funding sources.
