Millcreek approves school district electronic message signs at six locations

The Millcreek Township Board on March 24 approved five conditional‑use requests from the Millcreek Township School District to install electronic message center signs at six school locations in R‑1 residential zones.
Director Waldinger introduced the application and noted the Planning Commission recommended approval. Mike Geller, director of engineering for the school district, told the board the signs will match previously approved installations at Chestnut Hill and JS Wilson and will be installed during the summer. “They’ll be exactly the same size,” Geller said, adding masonry elements will be matched to site architecture.
Township solicitor Attorney Shaw reviewed the legal standard for conditional uses, saying applicants are entitled to conditional use approval unless specific objective zoning criteria are not met and that the board may impose reasonable safeguards. Shaw said the applicant had demonstrated compliance with section 1145‑88 and that additional safeguards were at the board’s discretion.
The board voted separately on each location (addresses listed in the application); each motion to approve passed unanimously.
Approved locations include sites on West Sixth Street, Henderson Road, Lancaster Road, Stertania Road (two sites), and West Lake Road. The school district plans to replace several existing signs and to install one new sign; Geller said the district expects installation to occur over the summer.
