Silver City group wins $14,000 Dust and Wonder grant; community favors park site for sculpture

Meg Burns of the Silver City Preservation Society presented survey results and a proposal April 9 for the Dust and Wonder Trail program: the society has been granted $14,000 through Travel Nevada to purchase or commission a sculpture for Silver City that must be installed by Sept. 30.
Survey responses preferred a community‑themed piece (the railroad‑spike option was the leading choice) and the park was the generally favored installation location. Burns and board members discussed alternatives; NDOT property ownership makes the Devil’s Gate site infeasible, so options will be refined and a recommendation returned to the CAB at a future meeting. Sarah Ross noted that more respondents supported the project than opposed it, and Burns said the society will collect possible locations and present them at the next meeting.
No formal board action was taken on the sculpture donation at this meeting; Commissioner Cassinelli said the Commission’s approval would be required for park placement if the CAB recommends it.
