Residents press council on safety, code enforcement and fiscal transparency; candidate announces Senate run

Greenville — Residents used the council’s statement-of-citizens periods on May 19 to urge action on local safety, building maintenance and fiscal transparency, and to announce a state Senate campaign.

At the opening citizen statements, Bart Brown of 322 E. Benton asked that council meeting recordings be added to the city website and questioned a recent speed-limit change around Baldwin Lake, linking the change to council responsibility for public safety. Katie DeBoer introduced herself and said she is running for State Senate in District 33. Gerald Wellman raised a code-enforcement complaint about a broken window at the Rumney’s building downtown. Kevin Carlson spoke about the accounts-payable report, and Jeff Hines applauded DeBoer and referenced an email he had sent to the mayor.

During a later statement-of-citizens period, Bart Brown returned to press on safety and media coverage of the speed-limit change; Dylan Brown emphasized a "people-first" approach to safety; and Jeff Hines repeated concerns about attendees who come to complain and alleged perceived corruption.
