Senators on the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee voted to release SJR137, a joint resolution to designate June 10 of each year as Christina Grimmie Day.
Witnesses described Christina Grimmie’s rise from a Marlton, New Jersey, teenager posting YouTube videos to a national audience and recounted the work of a family foundation that provides rapid ‘mini-grants’ — cited as approximately $1,500 each — to families who lose loved ones to gun violence. Lauren Longo, who identified herself as Grimmie’s best friend, said the foundation has distributed roughly $600,000 and partners with district attorneys and victim advocates to stretch those funds.
Committee members praised the tribute and the foundation’s work. The committee amended and released the resolution; sponsors and proponents said the state designation would help memorialize Grimmie and amplify the foundation’s assistance to families.
The resolution will move forward to the next legislative stage after committee release.
