Kasson expands GIS to give field crews and public more detail on utilities and parcels

KASSON — The city engineer presented an expanded Geographic Information System (GIS) that staff say will make it easier for public works crews to find and document utilities, and will provide a public-facing parcel and zoning viewer for residents and developers.
Brandon (S6) showed council the public viewer layer — parcels, zoning, plats, parks and schools — and then demonstrated an internal Public Works Editor that includes sanitary sewer, storm sewer, water lines, pavement-condition ratings and record drawings. He said the system can open a parcel directly in Google Street View when available, allow staff to mark gate valves and curb stops in the field with mobile devices, and access scanned record drawings and maintenance logs.
The engineer described operational benefits: quicker location of valves during water-main responses, fewer duplicate excavations, and improved planning because staff can see recorded asset attributes (construction dates, sizes and last-cleaned dates where available). He said the city will restrict edit permissions to staff and GIS personnel to prevent public changes and that the system will support future work-order generation and GPS-enabled mapping to improve accuracy.
Council members welcomed the tool and asked staff to prepare any training and to update the city website with construction notifications tied to GIS maps.
The meeting recorded no formal action associated with the GIS demonstration.
