Englewood to rename William Street for fallen firefighter Lieutenant William Stimper

The Englewood City Council on Nov. 25 adopted a resolution to rename William Street “Lieutenant William Stimper Way” in honor of a firefighter who died in the line of duty. The resolution was introduced by a council member, moved by Councilman Wilson and seconded by recreation director Teshaun Warren, and approved by roll call of members present.

The city’s fire chief read the resolution, saying Lieutenant William Stimper served the department for 26 years and collapsed from chest pain after responding to a house fire on Dec. 12, 1952. The document states 61 residents signed a petition supporting the renaming and asks that the city present a copy of the resolution to the Stimper family and preserve it in official records. “Lieutenant William Stimper…made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the city,” the chief read to the council.

Councilman Tokayor thanked the chief for shepherding the effort and asked whether family members would attend the street dedication; the chief said several relatives live in South Carolina and will attend. The chief confirmed the city will hold a street dedication on Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. at the corner of Englewood Avenue and William Street.

The council clerk conducted a roll call on the resolution; the transcript records affirmative votes by the council members present and notes one member, Councilman Rosenzweig, was absent with prior notice. The resolution directs that a copy be presented to the Stimper family and preserved in the city’s official records.

The council paused afterward to proceed with a separate recognition ceremony and said it would reconvene at 8:30 p.m.
