Commissioners were told that the recent FAA Part 139 inspection "went very, very well" and that staff received positive comments about recordkeeping and training. The group also reviewed a nighttime inspection test during which radio-controlled runway lighting at one end failed to respond.
A county representative described troubleshooting of the radio-control lighting system, which relies on a 30-plus-year-old receiver and antenna. He said staff expected a new antenna and coaxial to arrive and that installation should restore the high-intensity runway lights; he noted a receiver replacement could cost roughly $6,000.
The representative framed the problem as an aging-asset maintenance issue rather than a systemic safety failure; inspectors recorded only minimal write-ups and praised the airport's emergency-response drill. "The unit replacement is $6,000, which is very expensive. The antenna replacement is much, much less," he said.
Why it matters: runway lighting is critical for nighttime operations and instrument procedures. The commission was told the immediate fix is on order and staff will proceed with installation and follow-up with the FAA inspector as needed.
