Redmond to close Veterans Way for roundabout work; full weekend closure expected June 6–7

City engineers told the Redmond City Council that construction on the East Side Arterial will require phased local closures and a weekend full closure to complete a roundabout at Veterans Way and Airport Way.

Jake Sherman, principal engineer in Public Works, said staff identified a city parcel south of Veterans Way to build a temporary road that will reroute east–west traffic around the construction area while preserving local business access. Sherman said the phased work begins April 6 to construct the temporary route and is slated to run in phases through early June.

"We found that building this temporary road was actually a viable solution, to maintain traffic, both eastbound and westbound on Veterans Way," Sherman said. He described a detour that will turn eastbound traffic onto Lake Road, onto the temporary road to Pumice Avenue, then to 1st Street and Airport Way.

Sherman told council the primary closure phase is scheduled from April 6 until June 5 for phased tie-ins and nighttime work on Lake Road. He said a full closure to complete the roundabout is planned for the weekend of June 6–7, with the roundabout opening Monday morning, June 8.

Councilors asked whether local business access would be maintained; Sherman said access will be preserved for businesses and that staff held an open house with about 50 businesses to review the detour and schedule. City staff said night work for certain tie-ins will limit daytime impacts.

The council did not take separate action on the presentation; staff said the project remains on a construction schedule and that communications (exhibits, mailers, and business outreach) had been completed.
