Salt Lake City sustainability staff briefed the Planning Commission on Climate Forward SLC, the city’s first formal climate plan effort to set mitigation and adaptation strategies and coordinate climate work across departments.
Deputy Director Sofia Nicholas said the plan builds on prior city resolutions that call for aggressive emissions reductions and for 100% renewable electricity for the city by 2030 and an 80% greenhouse‑gas reduction by 2040. Senior program manager Catherine Wiffles presented an existing‑conditions report showing an 11% drop in community emissions between 2009 and 2024, a 25% per‑capita decline, and maps identifying heat‑vulnerable and low‑income census tracts.
Staff described plan principles — urgency, collective action, partnerships, transformation, people‑centered approaches, and resilience — and said the plan will pair mitigation actions (clean energy, buildings, transportation) with adaptation measures focused on equity and community resilience. Commissioners asked whether the inventory covers scope 1, 2 or 3 emissions (staff said the community inventory focuses on direct and community electricity/fuel emissions) and discussed opportunities to accelerate building electrification and demand‑side measures.
Staff said they will draft strategies this year and begin the formal adoption process in winter, with stakeholder and public engagement continuing.
