County accepts $401,359 state grant to expand mobile rural health services

The Hunterdon County Board of County Commissioners on May 19 voted to accept a $401,359 rural preventive health grant from the New Jersey Department of Health to expand mobile and preventive services across the county.
County Administrator Brett Meyer told the board the grant — a pass‑through from federal funds administered by the state — will fund three thematic areas: clinical screening and education; mobile services and transportation; and stress‑management and healthy‑lifestyle programming. Meyer said the health department applied for the grant to provide mobile biometric screenings, vision and dental care, adult vaccinations and cancer screening services in partnership with local clinics and volunteers.
Meyer said the county plans to deploy a mobile unit to bring services to residents who cannot reach stationary clinics and that the grant will expand mammography access for residents in need. "This grant is gonna enable Hunterdon County, among other things, to offer mammography services as well now to residents that are in need of care," he said.
Director (speaker 3) noted the program can be funded "without having to levy an extra $400,000 in property taxes," and the board moved and approved the resolution.
The board voted by roll call to authorize acceptance of the grant. The motion was offered and seconded during the meeting (mover and seconder recorded in the meeting minutes). County staff will proceed with contracting and partnership arrangements to operate the mobile unit and deliver the clinical services described in the grant application.
Next steps include procurement of the mobile van and coordination with local healthcare partners to schedule screening and educational events in targeted rural areas. Staff said the grant period runs from April 2026 through Oct. 30, 2026, and that additional partnerships with pharmacies and local providers will support the program’s referrals and follow‑up care.
