Golf course reports $1M surplus, asks council to note small year-end transfers

A representative for the municipal golf course told the Gardner City Council the course continues to operate like a small business within the city’s finances and entered the year with a surplus.
The presenter said the golf course has ‘‘a little over $1,000,000’’ in surplus and about 700 members so far this season, with a target of roughly 750. He described major revenue sources as upfront memberships, cart rentals and token sales, and said the course is reinvesting in buildings, irrigation upgrades and equipment. ‘‘Keep upgrading the equipment... People are getting paid, which is good,’’ he said.
The presenter acknowledged that some line items have exceeded budget and said the course will make a couple of transfers before the fiscal year ends. Councilors asked about grounds work visible from Green Street and a salary line in the mayor’s request that showed $58,000; the council asked staff to follow up on that salary figure and confirm whether it reflected a year’s wage or a misclassification. The presenter agreed to check and report back.
Because the golf course is run from an enterprise fund, councilors noted overspending there does not draw directly from the city’s general fund, though transfers and accounting clarity were still requested.
