Board enacts temporary 25 mph speed limit on County Route 625 after bridge inspection

The Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners voted May 5 to set a temporary speed limit of 25 miles per hour on a section of County Route 625 between Stonebridge Road and Perryville Road after county crews discovered a hole in the concrete of a railroad bridge while performing pothole repairs.
Deputy staff reported that county crews alerted NJDOT, which inspected the structure and implemented temporary measures that allowed the bridge to reopen. The deputy director said NJDOT recommends a lowered speed limit and the placement of barriers along the pedestrian walkway until a permanent DOT-identified repair is completed.
"There is a structural team that's working on a longer-term replacement through the state," the deputy director said, describing a temporary weight reduction, temporary repairs and the need for a future detour plan when more significant repairs are required. The board approved the speed-limit change and asked staff to communicate details to local officials.
Commissioners emphasized coordination with NJDOT and local officials and asked engineering to install temporary signage and barriers to protect motorists and pedestrians. The measure takes effect immediately and will remain until NJDOT identifies and completes a permanent solution for the bridge.
