Millburn board approves consent items; public and members press for budget transparency

At its April 6 meeting the Millburn Township Board of Education approved multiple consent items, including instruction items 1a–1e, personnel item 2A, business items 3A–3E and special-services item 4A. Each motion was put to a roll call and recorded in the transcript; the clerk reported the motions passed.

During the public-comment period a resident asked for more outreach about the proposed budget (referencing a 5.8% increase), asked when the demographic study purchase on the agenda would be shared publicly, and raised questions about the turf-field engineer’s report and whether capital-reserve funds had been appropriated for that project. The resident urged the district to explain what cost-control steps or program changes are being considered in response to increased costs.

Board member Ms. Wong asked for additional public budget hearings and explained that, in her understanding, health-benefits costs rose from $16,200,000 to $20,100,000 (a $3.9 million increase), and that much of the tax-levy impact is driven by benefits. The board discussed scheduling; leadership said it will check calendars and announce a special meeting in early May to interview attorney RFP candidates. The meeting adjourned following a second round of public comment and member remarks.
