Millburn students honored at state and national art and music events, board hears showcase

Trustees at the Millburn Township Board of Education meeting on April 20 heard a visual and performing arts showcase and a K–12 music program briefing that highlighted student awards at regional and national competitions.
Linda Kim, a high school art teacher, described Millburn’s success in juried shows and competitions: “It’s 50 works were selected, by panel of jurors and Melbourne won more spots, 7 artworks than any other high school in the exhibition or the state.” The presentation named multiple recognitions: 26 students selected for the Inspired Minds exhibition at SOPAC, strong Scholastic regional results that feed national adjudication, and nine national Scholastic medals this year (eight in art, one in writing).
The music program report detailed district ensemble activity and student auditions for Region, Allstate and All Eastern ensembles; speakers noted ensembles’ appearances at the North Jersey Choral Festival and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival. A student soloist who won the U.S. Marine Band concerto competition, Olivia Shidler, performed for the board. Trustees and the superintendent praised the performance and the teachers who coach ensembles.
Students also spoke about the role of sustained arts participation in their academic and college preparation. Senior Raul Dusanj Mickelson said the arts provide continuity and skills attractive to college admissions officers, while sophomore Jamie DeRosa described how band and art sustained her through busy academic schedules.
Board members repeatedly commended educators and students for the district’s arts and music achievements and said the programs are a source of pride for the community. The district said several public events and exhibitions are upcoming, including an opening-night gallery ceremony in May at SOPAC and regional adjudication results to be announced for national competitions.
