Henry County board hears public comments on $231.5 million proposed budget; approves remote participation for supervisor

The Henry County Board of Supervisors on April 20 held a public hearing on the proposed fiscal year 2026-27 county and school budgets, which together total $231,528,674, and approved a motion allowing Supervisor Travis Pruitt to participate remotely.
County Administrator Dale Wagoner said he presented the proposed FY2026-27 budget to the board earlier in April and reminded the public that, pursuant to §15.2-2506 of the Code of Virginia, the board must hold a public hearing before adopting budgetary measures. "The proposed budget recommends $117,973,744 for our school system, which includes $24,352,855 in local funds," Wagoner said.
During the public hearing, Jeffrey Hodges of Reed Creek District addressed the board about concerns with his recent real estate assessment. Craig McCroskey, treasurer for the West Piedmont Better Housing Coalition and the Warming Center of Martinsville & Henry County, asked the board to increase funding for the Warming Center. Representatives S.T. Fulcher and Keith Sink of the Fieldale Volunteer Fire Department thanked the county administrator and the board for providing funds to replace the roof at their station.
Earlier in the meeting the board considered and approved a motion to allow Supervisor Travis Pruitt to participate remotely from Las Vegas, N.C.; Dr. Pam Cobler moved the motion, Ms. Debra Buchanan seconded it, and the board voted in favor with AYES from Adams, Buchanan, Cobler, Dillard and Lawless and NAYS: none. With no further business the board adjourned at 7:26 p.m. following a motion by Ms. Buchanan and second by Mr. Dillard that carried unanimously.
Wagoner reminded residents that the board will hold a meeting and a public hearing to set tax rates on April 28, 2026, and that the proposed budget is available on the Henry County website.
