Henry County approves school sales‑tax appropriation, intercom upgrades and bus purchases

The Henry County Board of Supervisors on April 28 approved school-related spending requests from the School Board that include a $162,100 appropriation from the county's one-percent sales-tax fund and categorical transfers totaling $848,577.
County Administrator Dale Wagoner said the $162,100 will pay architectural and engineering services for the replacement of electrical switchgear at Bassett High School and Magna Vista High School. Superintendent Dr. Amy Blake-Lewis provided the project purpose to the Board.
The Board also approved two categorical transfers: $195,560 moved from Administration, Attendance and Health to Maintenance to update the intercom system at Bassett High School, and $653,017 moved from Instruction to Pupil Transportation to purchase school buses for the division. Both measures passed unanimously.
In addition, the Board approved a $22,700 appropriation from vehicle insurance settlements requested by Sheriff Wayne Davis to repair existing sheriff's office vehicles.
Why this matters: the measures fund school safety and operations improvements (switchgear replacement and intercom upgrade) and add pupil-transportation capacity via new buses. The vehicle-insurance appropriation is administration of settlement funds for fleet repairs.
What's next: staff will carry out the appropriations and transfers; budget adoption for the full county and school budgets is scheduled for May 5, 2026.
