The Lancaster City Council voted Monday to repeal the city’s adoption of the International Fire Code 2015 edition and replace it with the 2021 edition, including local amendments that align Lancaster with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and support compliance with insurance-service (ISO) considerations.
City staff said the code is updated every three years and that moving to the 2021 edition — rather than immediately adopting the 2024 edition — lets Lancaster incorporate regional local amendments already vetted by the council of governments. Staff and the fire marshal were available to answer technical questions.
One councilor thanked the fire department for its work on the update but urged caution that some code provisions could burden small developers and entrepreneurs, citing items such as concrete thickness requirements and other measures that could increase construction costs for small projects.
The council opened the public hearing, received no public speakers on the code change, and then moved to close the hearing. A motion to adopt the ordinance passed by voice vote and the mayor declared the item carried.
