Sandpoint sustainability panel approves minutes, hears updates on downtown, budget and programs

The Sandpoint Sustainability Committee on Tuesday approved minutes from its prior meeting and spent much of its session receiving staff updates and scoping work for the coming year.
Chair Christine Moon opened the meeting and led a roll call before calling for approval of the March minutes, which a member moved and another seconded; Moon said the motion passed and the minutes were approved as presented.
Members then heard brief reports on downtown revitalization Phase 3 and student pilot projects; staff said only comment cards and no broad mailed survey had been circulated for the downtown open house, and faculty indicated student pilots will likely resume in August pending MOU review. Moon noted the committee’s first 2026 goal to collect baseline data and benchmark progress by December.
The committee also received previews of several items that will return for more detailed work: options for a city-owned chipper to support branch pickup (including storage and lifecycle cost considerations), a budget request that includes $1,800 for membership in ICLEI and $1,000 for an education fund, and a sustained effort to create a protocol for evaluating the sustainability impacts of projects referred to the committee.
The meeting closed with a round-table on member terms and recruitment, and a brief update on Dark Sky International guidelines intended to guide future discussion about a possible multi‑year designation effort. With no further business the committee adjourned at 2:52 p.m.
