The Groton RTM on May 13 voted to accept a $15,280 grant from the Related Affordable Foundation to expand the town’s Go Groton (Get Outdoors Groton) initiative. Representative Zuzulka read the recreation committee resolution and moved acceptance; the RTM approved the measure.
According to the resolution, the grant will provide bicycles, helmets and locks to identified children in the Brantford Manor community, eliminating the need to limit participation due to cost. Town staff said they will partner with a local bicycle shop to ensure proper fitting and to leverage volume pricing.
During discussion, members emphasized bike safety and outreach. Representative Weaver and others urged accompanying safety education after citing a recent serious bicyclist accident in the area; members suggested coordinating distribution with safety training at the town’s pump track or through school programs and using state handouts or QR codes to share safety guidance.
Representative Chase clarified the resolution targets children in need (identified through staff and partner outreach) rather than providing equipment to all children in the neighborhood. Town staff and the recreation committee said they will include stakeholders such as the Complete Streets advisory committee in distribution planning.
The RTM approved the grant and later moved to approve the recreation committee minutes from May 13.
