Salem Lakes updates permitting portal and website layout to ease public access

The Salem Lakes Economic Development Committee reviewed recent changes to the village website aimed at making permitting simpler to find and use.
Staff described three visible changes: a new Building & Zoning icon on the homepage, moving Building and Zoning content higher in menus, and highlighting the online permitting portal in yellow. "We added a quick icon to the front home page that says building and zoning," said the staff member who walked the committee through the changes.
On account requirements, staff said users must register to obtain a unique user account to view permit information. "So they do need to sign up as and register," the staff member said, adding that staff occasionally assist residents by filling in paper copies in the permit office for those who prefer not to use the online system.
Committee members asked about caller experience; staff said the village updated its automated phone menu to simplify routing so callers can more easily reach the right person. The upgrade is intended to reduce frustration caused by older, more complex phone trees.
The EDC also discussed broader website updates, including an EDC splash page to describe ongoing projects and the possibility of linking to a SurveyMonkey page for public feedback. Staff was asked to return with progress reports on ADA compliance and the proposed informational page.
