Pickens County board hears construction, furniture and safety upgrades ahead of 2027 renovations

Assistant Superintendent Chris Parker told the board the district has multiple projects under way and planned, including a forthcoming guaranteed maximum price (GMP) for the junior high, and RFPs for renovations at Harmony Elementary and Jasper Middle with work anticipated in 2027.
Parker said the district is replacing student furniture over several years and expects the program to continue through 2028; other projects include interior signage updates, installation of vape detectors in bathrooms for grades 6–12, teacher laptops, rekey projects, roof work at the high school and routine food-service kitchen inspections.
Parker also described workforce development activities: a career boot camp for seniors and employer visits to give students exposure to local healthcare, manufacturing and utility careers. He said the district uses spring breaks and summer windows to complete construction work with limited disruption to instruction.
Questions from the board were brief; no formal construction contracts were recorded as being approved at the meeting, though Parker said RFPs and a GMP will return to the board as required for approval.
