Commission explores using redevelopment-agency funds and matching grants to help local businesses

City staff explained that Naples includes two redevelopment agency zones and said grant money may be available to support businesses inside those zones.
Mike Davis told the commission that there are two redevelopment areas within the city boundaries and that ‘‘there is potentially money available’’ to help businesses within those zones. He said expanding assistance beyond the zones would likely require a city contribution to match funds, buy parcels or perform cleanup. Commissioners suggested eligible uses such as façade improvements, parking-lot fixes and landscaping. Commissioner Kevin Hiatt said he would prefer programs that incentivize existing businesses to elevate their properties and recommended matching grants to ensure participating businesses have ‘‘skin in the game.’’ Brock Arnold directed staff to bring back two or three options for the commission to consider.
The commission identified the commercial zone as an item for future discussion. Staff will return with specific grant-option proposals for the commission to evaluate and potentially authorize further public outreach or program design.
