Gaskin introduced himself to the board, saying, "It's Michael Gaskin. I'm ... I was raised here. My wife, Chelsea, she's a fourth-grade teacher here," and describing prior local involvement, including serving as president of a basketball team. He said he had discussed the vacancy with board members and that he would "be interested in taking a seat" to help students and teachers.
The board’s chair noted the county commission will appoint the 3rd District member on Jan. 20, after which the appointee would have to run in the August election to keep the seat. The chair also reminded potential candidates that paperwork to run for office must be filed with the election commission by Feb. 19 at noon.
No formal appointment was made at the meeting; Gaskin used his public-comment time to introduce himself and state his interest. The county commission appointment scheduled for Jan. 20 will determine who fills the seat until the next election.
