Council schedules April 7 work session to plan strategy for expiring fire levy

Council voted during the March 16 meeting to schedule a work session on April 7 at 6 p.m. to gather data and set strategy for a fire-levy renewal. The manager explained the city has several perpetual levies dating to the 1960s and one three-mill levy that expires in May 2027, and recommended early planning to avoid last-minute elections that could jeopardize public safety funding.
"So what I would like to do is propose a work session where we could go over a lot of the data, the price points, where we see, you know, especially with our projections," the city manager said, urging council to consider timing and millage options. Council discussed possible dates and agreed on April 7 (the day after Easter Monday). A motion to schedule that work session was moved, seconded and approved by roll call.
The manager said the work session will review projections, the changing costs of firefighting and emergency medical services, and different millage scenarios; no levy rate or ballot language was set at the meeting.
Next steps: the manager will prepare the data and price-point scenarios for the April 7 work session so council can determine whether and how to place a renewal before voters.
