The city manager announced that he signed closing documents for the former Presbyterian Church earlier the day of the March 16 council meeting and that church representatives are expected to sign on Wednesday, after which the city will assume ownership.
"Once we close we inherit the properties and we'll need to start talking about next steps," the manager said, and added that he and Mr. Kitko will meet with an architect using completed CAD drawings to discuss layouts and costs. Among potential uses the manager mentioned converting the church into future council chambers and mayor’s court, with ancillary space for a clerk’s office, jury-deliberation room and judges’ chambers if a municipal court is pursued.
The manager described the adjacent center property as a "clean canvas" for a remodel into a major administrative building with possible space for United Senior Services or other community assembly uses. He said the city would phase projects to manage costs and would present blueprints and price points to council at a future work session.
Council did not vote on a purchase or design decisions during the meeting; the manager said the next step will be meetings with the architect and then a future work session to review drawings and costs.
