WIAA executive tells board hosting state championships brings 'a good problem' and economic boost

Nick Hoffman, executive director for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, thanked the Battle Ground School District at the board's May 11 meeting for hosting the state cheerleading championships and described the event's local economic benefit.
Hoffman said the competition attracts thousands of participants and fans; he cited figures of roughly 1,700 cheerleaders and 5,200 fans over the event weekend and estimated that the two-day event can bring as much as $750,000 in economic impact to Battle Ground. He praised the district and the building team for supporting the event and said WIAA is evaluating future dates and capacity constraints to balance growth and local resources.
"Almost 8,000 people descend onto Battle Ground" for the event, Hoffman said, noting staffing burdens on volunteers and local businesses and that some venues stayed open late to serve attendees. Board members thanked Hoffman and discussed exploring additional community-asset uses of district facilities.
No board action was required on the presentation; directors thanked WIAA for the partnership.
