Dickenson County students win statewide writing prize; Ridgeview students showcase solar go-kart STEM project

Ridgeview High School students and advisors were recognized at the May board meeting: Antoinette White won first place in the short story category statewide, and a student team presented a student-built solar go-kart highlighting cross-disciplinary STEM work and community support.
Miranda White, English department teacher and Pack Productions advisor at Ridgeview High School, described the district's new Pack Productions program and its students' performance at the VHSL statewide creative-writing contest. She said six Pack Productions students participated; Ridgeview placed sixth overall statewide and Antoinette White won first place in the short story category — the division's first state-level winner in that category.
"We are thrilled," Miranda White said, and described plans to launch a student literary magazine, Embers to Ink, and to expand media and film festival participation in future years.
Separately, Scott Anderson, the district's auto-technology teacher, outlined the solar go-kart/STEM project that Ridgeview students built for an out-of-area race. Anderson said the project involved fabrication, steering and suspension work, electronics integration and about six weeks of concentrated student work; students and advisers described travel, troubleshooting and a team-oriented build process.
Board members and the superintendent praised students and staff for both the literary achievement and the hands-on STEM work. The board asked staff to pass along congratulations; advisors thanked the board for its support.
