Board approves retirement incentive, sale of 15 surplus buses and employee recommendations

The Dickenson County School Board unanimously approved three administrative items during its May meeting: reauthorization of the district's retirement incentive policy for employees, authorization to sell 15 surplus buses, and approval of employee recommendations after returning from a closed session.

On the retirement incentive, staff said the policy is unchanged from the prior year and is reauthorized annually based on budget availability. Scott Anderson moved to approve the policy and a board member seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote.

The board also approved placing 15 out-of-service buses (model years roughly 2000–2007) on a surplus-sale bidding process. Staff indicated the buses are not road-ready and that Mooney and Lacey Edwards will manage the bidding and disposal process.

After convening a closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, the board reconvened and certified the closed meeting. A board member then moved to approve the employee recommendations presented in closed session; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The district did not read individual personnel actions in open session; the motion covered the package of hiring and personnel recommendations contained in the closed-session materials.

What this means: the retirement incentive remains available subject to budget, the district will seek bids for the listed surplus buses, and personnel changes approved by the board will be implemented per standard district procedures.
