The Dexter Community School District Board of Education approved a facilities-committee recommendation to replace deteriorated sauna benches and wall finishes at the district-operated wellness center.
Staff said both the men’s and women’s sauna rooms had reached a state of deterioration “from typical commercial use” and recommended replacement of benches and wall materials. Facilities staff obtained three bids and recommended the lowest responsive local carpentry contractor for a not-to-exceed cost of $30,000, to be funded from remaining 2017 bond dollars associated with prior district projects.
Trustees asked whether 2017 bond funds may be used for the wellness center; staff said legal guidance and bond language permit spending bond proceeds on facilities that were acquired or built during the bond period and that remaining monies from the 2017 bond have been managed prudently. Trustees also discussed longer-term funding options because the wellness center generates membership revenue; staff said the center is aligning fiscal years with the district and working on a multi-year plan involving 2025 bond allocations and operational income.
After discussion the board approved the project and recorded roll-call support to fund the replacement from 2017 bond savings.
Next steps: Facilities staff will coordinate the award and schedule work with the wellness center to minimize disruption to members.
