Board approves Series 1 construction awards for Dexter High School entrance and CTE expansion

The Dexter Community School District Board of Education voted to award construction contracts for Series 1, bid package number 6, formalizing work to build a secure main entrance at Dexter High School, expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) space and complete associated trades.
Board leadership introduced a facilities-committee recommendation and a tabulation and recommendation letter from Granger asking the board to authorize multiple trade contracts “for a total amount not to exceed $9,242,052,” covering demolition, concrete and masonry, structural steel, general trades, roofing, metal wall panels and glazing, drywall and acoustical work, flooring and finishes, plumbing, mechanical, and site concrete and asphalt.
District staff and the project representative, Greg, walked trustees through the scope: a new secure entrance routed through the front office, a waiting/reception area with acoustic panels and rubber flooring, a new weight-room addition, and an enlarged CTE shop with a storage mezzanine and space large enough for curriculum projects (Greg said the program could build a roughly 1,200-square-foot house as part of hands-on instruction). The superintendent said Granger and the district’s architects (TMP) had iterated designs to create an entrance “that looks like it was part of the original design,” and that the team had worked to keep the design economical while responding to committee feedback.
Trustees focused questions on two cost points: two remaining bid categories — electrical and earthwork — were not included in the $9.24 million figure and, when those packages are added, district staff estimated the overall Series 1 work could approach $13 million, above an original planning number near $11 million. The presenter said the current packet reflects the award recommendation for the packages before the board and that staff will return with the two remaining packages after additional interviews and vetting.
Board members also asked about accessibility and parking. Greg said accessible visitor parking will be retained and the new secure entrance will be about 100 feet closer to existing parking, shortening the walk to the building and providing an interior waiting area near the theater/CPA. He confirmed the bid package includes a hydronic snow-melt system for stairs and ramps to reduce salt use and protect door frames.
Trustees discussed sequencing across bond series; staff said some civil and infrastructure work originally planned in later series had been consolidated into Series 1 to avoid repeat trenching and to capture efficiencies.
After discussion the board approved the recommendation to award the Series 1, bid package 6 contracts as presented.
Next steps: staff will return with the remaining electrical and earthwork packages and provide updated total project costs and recommendations at a future facilities or board meeting.
