At the Cherokee County work session, staff reviewed a broad consent docket and a dozen county-manager items touching on public-safety grants, opioid-abatement allocations, infrastructure projects, and multiple SPLOST-funded purchases.
Consent highlights included a request from Cherokee Focus for $39,000 in opioid-abatement funds to support phase 1 of a multi-platform community resource guide and a juvenile-court request to allocate $30,000 of opioid-abatement funds to cover drug-testing costs through the Cherokee County Drug Lab (urine screens $35; hair tests $85). County staff said both requests align with the National Opioid Settlement allowable uses and require budget amendments.
Grant management also sought approval of the 2025 CDBG HOME consolidated annual performance evaluation report for HUD submission. The Sheriff's Office was noted to have an allocated $17,096 Edward Byrne JAG award (FY2025) requiring appropriation.
County Manager (speaker 6) summarized capital and operating requests: a project-framework agreement with GDOT to secure $400,000 in federal design funds for the Town Lake Parkway Trail Phase 2 (county local match $100,000 to be supplied by TSPLOST), a construction contract with Southeast Restoration Group for renovations to four fire stations (contract $1,499,464 with 10% contingency), and several Public Works equipment purchases through cooperative contracts to support an expanded paving program (lowboy $197,790; power sweeper $103,900; tack truck $171,914.50). He said the trail engineering funds will require execution of a GDOT framework IGA and that additional right-of-way and construction agreements will follow.
Staff told commissioners that the juvenile-court diversion grant (Criminal Justice Coordinating Council) and associated MOU with Evidence Based Associates would cover services for about 13 youth and families and requires no county match.
No final votes were taken at the work session; many items will appear on a future voting session or be subject to scheduled hearings or budget amendments.
