La Porte board signs MOU with YMCA to operate before- and after-school care

The La Porte School Board on April 13 authorized a memorandum of understanding with the La Porte County Family YMCA to transition the district's before- and after-school care program at Boston Middle School and Crutchfield Elementary to YMCA operation.
Superintendent Dr. Wood told the board the district does not consider operation of childcare central to its core mission and that partnering with the YMCA should improve staffing reliability and create opportunities to expand program offerings. "Our goal is for this transition to be seamless with no noticeable changes for families," Dr. Wood said. He added that current families would be prioritized for enrollment and the YMCA is working to keep costs comparable.
Scott Helkamp, identified in the transcript as the YMCA executive director, attended the meeting and was noted as part of early partnership discussions. Board members moved and approved the MOU by voice vote.
The superintendent said the partnership will allow the district to maintain a valuable service for families while shifting operations to an organization that specializes in child care. The board provided no specific dollar figures in the meeting; the superintendent said program costs and prioritization of current families were part of the MOU terms.
