Board approves downtown North Street purchase for courthouse parking despite lone dissent

Cherokee County commissioners voted 4–1 on April 21 to acquire 4.63 acres on North Street in downtown Canton for a net price of $4,912,630, including a $500,000 donation toward Badger Creek Park improvements, to expand parking during courthouse construction and enable future courthouse expansion.
County staff said the land purchase is funded from 2018 SPLOST dollars. The board discussed the high per-acre cost; the chair said the acquisition avoids an expensive shuttle alternative during courthouse construction and could reduce long-term parking structure costs. "As expensive as it is, it is, in my mind, clearly the best alternative," the chair said during discussion.
The board also approved a limited Phase II environmental site assessment with NOVA Engineering for $25,850 to document recognized environmental conditions identified during due diligence, and to pursue brownfield registration with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to limit liability. That vote likewise passed 4–1 with Commissioner Cagle recorded as opposing both measures.
Both items passed and staff were authorized to proceed with closing and remediation planning as appropriate.
