Cherokee County honors firefighters, EMTs and a civilian for life‑saving responses

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners opened its March 17 work session by recognizing firefighters and EMS crews for several life‑saving responses and a civilian who performed CPR.
Deputy Chief Davis presented unit citations to crews who extricated and transported an entrapped patient from Little Refuge Road and who responded to an entrapment on Towne Lake Parkway on Jan. 9, 2024. Staff said rapid on‑scene care and quick transport ‘‘gave the patient a fighting chance’’ and hospital updates later showed a ‘‘remarkable recovery.’’
Davis also recognized members who provided mutual aid to Dade County, Georgia, on a brush fire that consumed about 2,500 acres. According to Davis, crews adopted a defensive position to protect residences where local radio communication and water supply failures complicated the response.
The board presented EMS Lifesaver awards to several paramedics and EMTs for an April 5, 2025 cardiac‑arrest response. The board also awarded the Civilian Lifesaver Award to Kirsten Olvey, who performed CPR on her mother; Olvey told the board that ‘‘the 9‑1‑1 operator coached me through the whole thing until the responders got there’’ and that operator guidance was crucial to the outcome.
Chair praised Cherokee County Fire and EMS as ‘‘the pride of Cherokee County’’ and thanked crews for their service. The recognition items required no board action; they were ceremonial presentations at the start of the work session.
