Board rates superintendent 'extremely effective,' extends contract and approves student-appeal outcomes

Following an executive session the Florence 1 Board of Trustees moved in open session on the superintendent’s evaluation and student appeals.
Board member Mister Townsend moved that Dr. Richard O’Malley receive an overall rating of 5 ("extremely effective") for the 2025–26 school year, that the board chair be authorized to amend O’Malley’s contract to extend the term through 06/30/2031, and that a one-time bonus of $20,000 be provided. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
On student appeals, the board announced decisions for four cases that had been considered in executive session. For student number 1 the board affirmed the hearing officer’s decision but modified the remedy so that the assignment to Rush Academy is for the remainder of the current school year rather than 30 days. The hearing officer’s decisions for students 2, 3 and 4 were affirmed without modification.
The board recorded the votes by voice; no roll-call tallies are included in the public transcript. The chair noted that no action had been taken during the executive session and that the subsequent motions were the board’s formal responses to matters discussed privately.
Next steps: administration will implement contract amendments and process the approved personnel actions; the district will carry out the student-appeal determinations consistent with board direction.
