Students honored for state competition finishes; Envirothon team members receive $500 scholarships

The Saucon Valley School District recognized several student teams for recent state competition results.
Board members presented a formal award to Saucon Valley Middle School’s I‑Team for placing second at the "What's So Cool About Manufacturing" state competition. An adviser thanked the board and read the students' names, including Jacob Thompson, Samantha McCarthy, Eleanor Wechler, Jethro Yardley, Eamon Wood, Micah Gill, Andrew Robert and Beverly Wood. The adviser said the group was only the second time the middle school had reached states and the first time it had placed.
Separately, Saucon Valley High School's Envirothon team was recognized for placing in multiple competition areas at the state contest; the board noted the team earned third place in forestry and awards across forestry, soils and other categories. A team representative, Captain Stepan Gudzsousian, said the team had worked hard and thanked adviser Kimberly Mertz. The district said each Envirothon student took home a $500 scholarship and certificates of recognition.
Board members congratulated the students and invited them to have a photo taken in the hallway after the meeting.
