Mountain Brook school board approves curriculum, staffing and schedule items

The Mountain Brook Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to approve a package of routine items including adoption of social studies instructional materials, a recurring 240‑day employee summer schedule and a zoning assignment for 3829 White Oak Drive.
The board, meeting at the Mountain Brook Board of Education offices, heard a financial report from Kari Austin, chief school finance officer, and voted to accept the financial statements and cash balances for March 2026. Dr. Richard Barlow presented the recommendations for the board’s consent agenda items, and Board President Jenifer Kimbrough called for motions on each item.
On curriculum matters the board approved the previously tabled social studies instructional materials on a motion by Mrs. Anne Schilleci, seconded by Mrs. Anna Comer. Separately, the board voted to table the AP Business and Personal Finance materials until the May 18 meeting.
On staffing and operations the board approved personnel recommendations as submitted and declared designated items surplus. The board also approved a 240‑day employee summer schedule that begins the Monday of the full week following Memorial Day and ends the Friday prior to New Teacher Institute week; the schedule is to remain in effect annually unless modified by the board.
The board approved Policy J‑7a (Optional School Attendance Area) and voted to assign the residence at 3829 White Oak Drive (35243) to Brookwood Forest Elementary.
Dr. Barlow recognized Dr. Lauren Anson as a UAB Exemplary Alumna in Early Childhood Education and heard a brief report from Mountain Brook High School and Mountain Brook Junior High band and choir directors James Rogers and David Mandt about their trip to Vienna.
The board announced a Student Showcase on April 27, confirmed the next meeting for May 18, 2026 (work session at 2:00 p.m., meeting at 3:30 p.m.) and noted that Mountain Brook High School graduation is scheduled for May 21 at Samford University’s Pete Hanna Center. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
