Public and trustees press district on Title IX and ICE guidance after public comment

During the public comment period, a district taxpayer raised Title IX concerns and asked the board to remove a transgender student from a high school cheerleading squad, citing recent executive orders affecting athletics.

John Parkinson, introduced himself as a taxpayer in the district and urged the board to take action on the athletic eligibility question. Trustees did not take immediate action during the meeting; the comment was recorded in public comment and will be addressed through the district’s policy processes.

Later in the meeting trustees discussed a proposed ICE protocol memo administration circulated to provide staff with guidance on how to respond if immigration enforcement appears at school sites. Several trustees said they were uncomfortable engaging in national political debates and asked administration to explain the practical purpose of the guidance. Administration said the memo was prepared after legal advice and peer-district practice to help staff respond consistently to law-enforcement actions and that it is not intended to create a policy that conflicts with state or federal law.

Trustees asked for copies of the district’s Title IX policy and clarification on whether the district follows 2020 guidance or an updated standard; administration said it would provide the requested documents and suggested the matter could be placed on a future agenda for fuller discussion.

No formal policy changes were made at the Feb. 10 meeting; trustees asked administration to provide policy text and training materials for review.
