Newton County meeting roundup: vice-chair named, indigent burial funding approved, alcohol licenses OK'd

At its Jan. 6 meeting the Newton County Board of Commissioners named Commissioner LeAnne Long as Vice-Chair, approved a $7,800 coroner budget transfer for indigent burials, reappointed Kelly Robinson to the Board of Elections and approved several alcohol licenses and renewals.
The Newton County Board of Commissioners at its Jan. 6 regular meeting handled a series of administrative items including a leadership rotation, a small budget transfer, several license approvals and board reappointments.
The board amended the agenda to add the Vice-Chair appointment. District 3 Commissioner Andre Cooper and District 4 Commissioner J.C. Henderson declined the Vice-Chair rotation; Henderson nominated Commissioner LeAnne Long for the role. Commissioner Stan Edwards seconded the nomination and the board approved Long as Vice-Chair by a 5-0 vote.
The board approved a $7,800 budget transfer to the Coroner's Office to cover pauper/indigent burial expenses after Coroner Kimberly Griggs outlined administrative processes used to determine eligibility. County Attorney Stephanie Johnson advised that a Georgia statute requires the governing authority to provide a decent interment or cremation when statutory standards are met.
Consent items approved included the conversion of two Superior Court part-time positions to full-time (Coordinator —Annual Salary: $102,040.92; Case Manager —Annual Salary: $85,249.05) and the reappointment of Kelly Robinson to the Newton County Board of Elections for a four-year term.
On licensing, the board approved the final reading for A Huevo Que Si Taqueria (11230 Highway 36 East, Covington) with owner Rachel Arevalo Marre (District 5). The board also approved annual alcohol renewals for TMN Enterprises LLC dba World of Wings (5350 Highway 20), and beer-and-wine renewals for 1313 Limelight Inc. and SS USA INC. All motions passed by a 5-0 vote.
Public commenters included Alana Sanders, Annette Alston and Fred Johnson. The board provided closing comments and adjourned at 8:33 p.m.
