Board approves special-education residential services and adopts ransomware incident-response plan

The Fairbanks Local School Board approved a special-education residential-related services agreement for the 2026–27 school year for a student whose IEP team recommended residential placement. Superintendent (S3) said the IEP team determines the least restrictive environment and that the team may reconvene in April 2027 to reassess the student’s placement.
Separately, the board reviewed and approved an incident response plan dealing with cybersecurity incidents, including ransomware. S3 explained the plan outlines specific reporting protocols required at the state level (House Code 96 was mentioned) and identifies the required steps and people to notify in the event of a data incident. “We built it, and … we can all of this house code 96 work,” S3 said, describing the plan as an implementation of statutory reporting expectations.
Board members asked whether the incident-response protocol is an annual requirement; S3 said once incorporated into policy it will remain until cybersecurity requirements change.
Next steps: the district will implement the plan, ensure reporting pathways to the state are clear and convene the IEP team as needed to review residential placement decisions.
